Travel theme: Shine

It is hot, hot, hot and with the summer solstice just around the corner in the northern hemisphere, the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are truly here. The sun is shining and so is this week’s theme. To start off, here are some giant shiny Christmas ornaments in midtown Manhattan.

Railroad tracks shining in the sunset during a quick break on the Empire Builder.

Check out the gleam of that paint finish. A rare sighting of a rare beauty; there are only 150 ‘Kissel Kars’ known to exist today. I spotted this one getting ready to hit the road in a vintage car rally in Wisconsin.

Hidden in a Seattle neighbourhood, there’s a rather special tree called the Holiday Tree which changes not just with the season but with the holiday. Here it is shining out in all its Valentine’s Day glory.

High noon over one of my favourite places on the planet, the awe-inspiring Zion National Park.

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is light from within. – Elizabeth Kubler Ross

An age is called ‘dark’ not because the light fails to shine but because people refuse to see it. – James Michener

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.

Have to get trawling through the archive for this one, I think! Like your take on Zion National Park….

  2. Cindy Hess says:

Oh, I love the tree. I want one exactly like it in my garden. Though I am wondering if that might increase my electricity bill a bit too much.

Love it, Sue, what a great way to combine two challenges into one. I love watching glassblowers at work.

Thanks Ailsa! I agree, it’s great watching them at work. Years ago in Alsace I watched the craftsman, then bought some hand blown wine glasses from him, each one just slightly different so you know they are not mass-produced…

More great photographs, as I’ve come to expect, Ailsa. My favourite of this weeks collection is the sunshine on the railway lines. And as it would have it, my contribution also comes from sunset….
