Travel theme: Architecture

Fresh from my visit to the architectural playground of Seattle’s Central Library, I’m looking through some of the more interesting architecture I’ve found along the way on my travels. There was the intricately ornate Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de La Merced in Antigua, Guatemala.

The view of towers surrounding New York’s 9/11 Memorial, still under construction at the time of my visit, will stay with me forever.

Clouds appear to drift through the partially constructed buildings

I’ll never forget my surprise at seeing the soaring interior of the Franciscan Monastery of Mount St. Sepulchre on the outskirts of Washington DC.

Last but not least, the warm and cosy facade of Bewley’s coffee shop on Dublin‘s Grafton Street, all decked out for the holidays. It is still one of my favourite places to snuggle up with a cup of coffee.

If you would like to build upon this theme and join in this week’s travel photo challenge (everyone’s welcome), here’s what to do:

  • Create your own post and title it Travel theme: Architecture
  • Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
  • Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday
  • Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS – I’m in the process of changing over to a new website host but will give you all a heads up when the changeover happens. If you’re following via email there won’t be a change but if you’re following via WordPress you will need to sign up for email or RSS.

Looking forward to seeing what you construct for this week’s theme.

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.

  4. Ailsa, love your beautiful photo of Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de La Merced and of course I’m partial to the Franciscan Monastery, having visited there myself after your suggestion! BTW I love the detail of the Iglesia. The photo you took of the new tower at the World Trade Center leaves me with mixed feelings. It is a rebirth, but I would love to have seen the original towers.

Great theme!!! I went a different route than all the gorgeous and majestic architecture I have been seeing and showed the relocation/rebuilding of a 1876 log cabin my brother is doing. http://avacationinmymind.com/2013/08/13/travel-theme-architecture/
