Travel theme: Wind

I feel like a character out of Wuthering Heights right now, having just returned from a blustery, windswept walk with gusts that threatened to knock me off my feet and squalls that have left my hair looking, umm, rather more distressed than usual. As I’ve been struggling to get a comb through my tangled locks, I’ve been leafing through my photos to see if any of them could offer up a depiction of winds, gales, breezes and flurries of air. First up, Coney Island in the off-season, biting winds driving carpets of sand across the beach and out to sea.

Strange things blow in through my window on the wings of the night wind and I don’t worry about my destiny. – Carl Sandburg

Faeries, come take me out of this dull world,
For I would ride with you upon the wind,
Run on the top of the dishevelled tide,
And dance upon the mountains like a flame. – WB Yeats (The Land of Heart’s Desire)

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.

Hmm, interesting theme, Ailsa – I’ll see what I can come up with…

  2. Leya says:

Interesting – yes! I just don’t know if I can find something here…but, your series is great and my favourite is the first one.

It’s a tricky theme for sure, Leya, but that’s half the fun. 😉 Yes, those shifting sands in Coney Island were quite an amazing sight, but boy did it hurt when the sand got in my eyes, I had to wear sunglasses even though it wasn’t sunny.

Ah the great Irish summer… like a breath of fresh WIND!! 😉

All lovely, but that first is the killer! 🙂

  8. The moving sand carpet of the first one is full of motion.
Great pictures – can almost hear the various winds blowing in each one

Your wind photos are fantastc Ailsa. I love the sand; enemy of the camera. I live in a very windswept place but as it is not my favourite condition, I rarely photograph it. I’ll see what there is in the basket, or maybe photograph it myself this week.

You want to hear about storms at sea? No? Then, how about this? Is using video to convey ‘wind’ cheating? I liked it, anyway! https://travelrat.wordpress.com/2012/08/13/international-kite-festival-semaphore/

Had to laugh at your first paragraph! I know exactly how you feel. My hair is short but thick and painful to comb after being out in the wind. My husband, who has little hair, just thinks I’m vain but I HAVE to comb it regularly.

Love the sand picture the most.

I actually love the wind Ailsa, it gives me a feeling of freedom, but it can be destructive too. https://pommepal.wordpress.com/2015/08/01/travel-theme-wild-wind/
