Where in the World?

Can you believe it’s been one year since I wrote my first post here? It’s been a year filled with travel, adventure, laughs and most of all, with community. I have been lucky enough to become online friends with genuinely inspiring people from all over the world – yes, I’m talking about you.  You have offered me tantalizing glimpses of the places you live in and have travelled to, and sparked my desire to see more of this amazing planet we all share. I don’t know what the coming year will bring, but if it’s anything like this past year, I cannot wait!

A few moments from the last year that stand out for me are:

1. A close encounter with a cloaked horseman in Sleepy Hollow

2. Seeing Volcán de Fuego erupt at night (and failing to get even one decent photo)

3. Re-visiting one of my favourite places in Ireland on Christmas Eve

4. Nearly being crushed by plummeting trees in a New York park

5. My trip to Ferryland

I wanted to do something fun to celebrate the first anniversary of “Where’s my backpack?” and thought a photo-inspired game might fit the bill. So without further ado, I give you my “Where in the World” challenge. I’m posting four photos and all you have to do is tell me where you think they were taken. Add your best guess as a comment, and get it in by October 30th. The first person to guess all four locations correctly will get a little gift from me. I’ll announce the winner (and reveal the locations) during the first week of November.

Get your best guesses in by October 30th, and thank you so much for making this first year such a great one. Here’s to a fun-filled second year!

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.

Thanks for checking out my blog. Yours is amazing, beautiful photos…. I hope that in a year’s time mine looks half as good and inspiring!

  4. Okay, pretty sure I can #3 but the others are total guesses!
    1. The foilage looks Southern Hemisphere to me so I will guess New Zealand – North Island.
    2. Looks so much like the area around Petra Jordan, though I don’t think there is enough red in the rocks and I can’t quite see the trees well enough to know if the are cedar or pine.
    3. One of my favourite places in the whole world! The River Liffey in Dublin Ireland and it looks like the tide is in. 🙂
    4. Really I can only go by the colour of the sand and the fact that the foilage doesn’t look tropical so maybe Black Sand Beach, California.
Pretty average guesses but it was fun to give it a go! 🙂
    Cheers,
    Laura

Love the pictures, I think the third pic. is the stumper, there are several places that could be, several of which I have been to, but without more surrounding information it will be tough. I will take a stab at this though.

    1. Volcan du Fuego, Guatemala
    2. Bryce Canyon, Utah
    3. River Liffey, Dublin
    4. Black Sand Beach, Hawaii

Excellent guesses, Lyle! Hey, I just checked out Huarocondo online, wow it looks amazing, and so close to Machu Picchu! I bet it’s a big change from Vegas! 🙂

      • mongo466 says:

Defiantly a big change from Vegas, actually a big change from the US in general (another topic for a blog). The two biggest changes have been city size and weather, it doesn’t get near as hot here. I do love it, though and have been working on learning as much as I can about the surrounding area. I want to be able to direct or take our guests to the interesting and out of the way places that the average tourist doesn’t see, as well as the standard tourist sights. Ailsa, congratulations! One year — very cool and inspiring for someone who started three months ago. I’m glad to be a follower of your blog, and I’ll look forward to hearing about your next adventures. Happy Travels! Steph 🙂

You have a very beautiful blog with beautiful photos! I look forward to seeing more of your posts! 🙂

  11. Ok. I know that i am oh so wrong on some of these, but others above are wrong on one… but i dont know what the right answer is…

I do not know where the first one is, but it looks kinda like the San Juan Islands off of the coast of Vancouver and Washington state. (my grandparents have a cabin on Lopez Island but it has been many years since i have been there, so this could be very wrong too.
second, i would also say Brice or even Zion Canyon (brice first guess)
third, i am going to take everyone elses word because i have never been there, but my great grandparents immigrated from there… Ireland.
and finally, the one that i know is NOT… it is not black sand beach in Ca. (could possibly be hawaii, but the land doesnt look right and the foliage… again… off.) and i will tell you why. The water is not grey enough. Way too green which means way to warm to be CA. And, there would be a little lighthouse at the end of the bluff if it were. As well, as the foliage not matching.

Your game is HARD! It is awesome that you have been to all of these places. You can truly call yourself a world traveler! When do we get to find out the answers??

    • ailsapm says:

Good guesses, bluepearlgirl’s world, and interesting argument for it not being Black Sand Beach – although I could have been there on a warm summer day and isn’t the lighthouse on Shelter Cove rather than Black Sand Beach? Just sayin… 🙂 I’ll be revealing the locations the first week of November. 🙂

      • bluepearlgirl's world says:

I am just as perplexed as ever! I cant wait until the big reveal! You i see must have some serious frequent flier miles!!

  12. Congratulations on completing a year!
    1. Chile (or some other country in South America)
    2. Grand Canyon (I was only 10 when I saw the canyon so memory escapes me)
    3. Amsterdam
    4. Belize (or another Caribbean island)
