Travel theme: Peaks

Ireland is pretty flat for the most part, with a great central plain surrounded by a scattering of cheeky peaks. The Wicklow Mountains and Blackstairs in the southwest are pretty but nowhere near lofty enough to give me the mountaineous rush I used to get heading up into the Cascades of northern Washington so I had to venture all the way over to Kerry in the southeast to come close.

Here are some other peaks I’ve encountered on my travels, starting with the famous Liberty Bell at Washington Pass.

The enigmatic Henry Mountains along Highway 24 in Utah; the last mountain range to be named in the continental US – they didn’t even appear on maps until 1872 and were referred to as the Unknown Mountains.

Volcanic peaks surrounding Guatemala‘s Lake Atitlan.

Peaks on a much smaller scale, but just as amazing – the magical fairy chimneys of central Turkey.

On all the peaks lies peace. – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

While on top of Everest, I looked across the valley towards the great peak Makalu and mentally worked out a route about how it could be climbed. It showed me that even though I was standing on top of the world, it wasn’t the end of everything. I was still looking beyond to other interesting challenges. – Edmund Hillary
