Travel theme: Grey

Grey is the only way to describe the summer we’ve been having in this corner of the planet. It has never ranked as one of my favourite colours, so I expected that finding photographs to represent it might prove a bit of a challenge, but I was wrong. Here are some greys (and grays seeing as all of these shots are US based) that I found. First, one of the mightiest hewn-stone constructions of the western world, the New Croton Dam north of New York City.

A grey river of volcanic debris at Mount St Helens in southern Washington.

A pushy grey squirrel in New York’s Battery Park took up camp right next to me on a bench.

The grey sidewalks and metal gratings of Times Square are a perfect contrast to the neon overhead, and they hide a secret sound installation for those who know where to find it.

Well, I have a whole new appreciation for the colour now that I’ve actually started looking more closely at it. If you would like to get your grey matter working and join in this week’s theme (everyone’s welcome!) here’s what to do:

  • Create your own post and title it Travel theme: Grey

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.

  1. Grey is a mood, too; even on the brightest vacation, you’re bound to burn out at some point… http://toomutchforwords.com/2015/08/13/travel-theme-grey/

  5. We just returned from Ireland. I think every Irishman/woman we met mentioned that this was the coolest, wettest summer they remembered in 10 years. It even made the news. We managed to dodge a lot of showers, get some sunshine, and only have too really soggy days. Note to others traveling there… never believe a forecast that says overcast but dry. Bring an umbrella or rain jacket. That was one soggy visit to Dublin Zoo!
