Travel theme: Purple

With visions of sugarplums cardinals still in my head after my bizarre day in Vatican City, I have gone looking for my purplest photos. Sitting on a Manhattan rooftop waiting for 4th of July I was treated to this lavender-pink sunset.

Radiant faces filled with glee and covered with gulal powder at Maple Valley’s Holi Festival.

I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it. – Alice Walker

Warning – a poem by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.

The Holi Festival photos are especially wonderful, Ailsa. My purple involves a trip to my local Priory ruins – Charles Darwin, Holy Bones and Wild Orchids at Wenlock Priory:

Your pictures are vibrant and gorgeous. I particularly love the Quinceañera. I’m a little pokey about entering my purple treats, but I couldn’t resist the perfect opportunity to display these quilts. http://wp.me/p2jC53-20I
