Fresh from a shoe full of slimy mud deep in the Ape Cave, I can’t stop thinking about the colour brown. It’s not always the most attractive of colours; culturally it’s often associated with poverty and plainness, but it’s also the colour of our earth and brings to mind the organic and natural. Here are a few of the more attractive browns I’ve found on my travels. First up, water dyed brown by surrounding bogs in Wicklow, Ireland.
The brown of a decadent gingerbread castle at last year’s Gingerbread Village in Seattle.
The brown of one of the sweetest dogs I’ve had the honour of travelling with, dear darling Sprocket, star of many of my adventures.
This cool field spotted from the train window of the Empire Builder as I whizzed across the US – it looks more like modern art than modern farming. 🙂
And last, but certainly not least, the very faded, rubbed off and well-loved brown of the original, the one and only Winnie-the-Pooh. Yes, the honest-to-goodness Winnie-the-Pooh, who I met not too long ago in New York.
You’ve got to admit, those are some pretty great browns, right? And I didn’t even include coffee or chocolate! So break out your mahogany, cinnamon, cocoa and hazel; dazzle me with toast, ecru and sepia. If you would like to join in (everyone’s welcome!) here’s what to do:
- Create your own post and title it Travel theme: Brown
- Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
- Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday
- Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS – I’m in the process of changing over to a new website host but will give you all a heads up when the changeover happens.

Thanks for posting this challenge right after our trip to the Inland Northwest where brown is ever-present in the hills, already-harvested fields, and barns. This is my first travel challenge, but maybe not my last! Thanks! http://ohtheplaceswesee.com/2013/10/18/travel-theme-brown/
Gorgeous brown from you, Ailsa! When I was young I really loved this colour and all my clothes were in hues of brown. I love it because it’s the colour of earth, it’s where we come from, what we live from and where we will go in the end.
Hi Ailsa, loved the dog photograph. I have run out of brown. Loved your photos and theme.

Hi Ailsa,
So many browns, so little time…
What at first seemed a little bit beige as an idea, soon became a brown wonderland of life’s interesting moments.
