Travel theme: Mystical

This week’s theme is inspired by a beautiful photograph Vlad posted over at Wind Against Current. Click the link to see his photo, and when you pick your jaw up off the floor, come on back over here and join in this week’s challenge.

Mystical is an evocative term with many nuances. I chose this word because it can be interpreted in so many ways. It can mean spiritually symbolic, otherworldly, ethereal or mysterious. I also love how this word sounds when you speak it aloud, and I can’t help but associate it with mists that conceal the everyday, cloaking the mundane in a veil of mystery. The verb ‘to mystify’; to make mysterious or obscure, is derived from the words mystic and mystery. Ooh, the possibilities are endless.

Last weekend I visited Washington State’s Olympic Penninsula and got a few photos that capture the essence of what mystical and otherworldly mean to me. I hope you like them.

So what does the word mystical conjure up for you? If you’d like to join in this week’s travel theme (everyone is welcome to join in), here’s what to do:

  • Create your own post and title it Travel Theme: Mystical
  • Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
  • Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday
  • Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes

Mystify me.

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.

    Hi Ailsa,

    Wow great pictures again.
Even the names of your images sound mystical.
The first one really looks like a fairytale dream…
Those soft colors and that silky moss makes one expect, little fairies are going to appear there any moment.
Hope you’ll like this detail of a mystical fall in my personal garden of Eden too 😉
    Have a great week

Hi Cee, what a wonderful series of photos – gosh every time I look at your photos I remember how little of Oregon I’ve seen and it reminds me I need to visit again. That shot of the moss covered stone along the Old Columbia Gorge Highway is fantastic. xxx

  10. Gorgeous, Ailsa! I looooove the Hoh Rainforest, it was a very transformative experience in my life to go there and then to see the clearcuts all around Washington and Oregon =(

    Hope ya’ll enjoy!

    • ailsapm says:

Yeah, Jan, the clearcuts bummed me out too, but the Hoh itself was so, so beautiful. I love the shot of Mt Jefferson, but my fave is the Sequoia shot – brilliant capture!

      • Thank you! That’s General Grant, the first evening we got to Sequoia (mom and lil bro and I); mom went to the hotel and I took my brother out in the fog and snow to see his first giant tree ever and I lay on my back in the snow to get that shot =)

I love your first pic Ailsa, with all the moss growing on the tree, just fantastic!

    • ailsapm says:

Very nice, Caron. That first shot is particularly fascinating, it’s quite disorienting as you scroll down, unclear whether it’s sky or water or both until the boats pop into view. Lovely watercolour too!
