After visiting the Phoenix Park the other day to watch the deer…

They were watching me as much as I was watching them
…I got a lift back into Dublin city centre by a man whose parents had christened him Stephen Dedalus; his sister Anna Livia. As we drove along Ellis Quay, we passed the James Joyce Bridge which spans the Liffey at the house on Usher’s Quay where ‘The Dead’ took place…

James Joyce Bridge
…and I suddenly remembered that Joyce’s major works, Ulysses, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Dubliners and Finnegans Wake are scheduled to enter the public domain at 12:01am on January 1st 2012. I can’t wait to see what Joycean delights the coming year brings. To celebrate, I’m publishing this post as close to midnight Dublin time as I can, before cracking open my well-worn copy of Finnegans Wake. Happy New Year.

About ailsapm
Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall.
And I’m just getting started.
If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.
Nice pix and a great writer to celebrate. Enjoy!
Happy New Year to you!
