Travel theme: Peaceful

After a few peaceful moments spent on that unusual concrete couch in Ballard, I found the theme for this week’s travel theme. I’ve been foraging through my photos for some of my favourite peaceful moments on my travels and here’s what I’ve come up with. First up, my refuge from the frenzy of New York life – most evenings I would grab a little folding chair and climb the stairs to the rooftop of my apartment building in Hell’s Kitchen to watch the sun set over the Hudson River.

There’s nothing like a thick blanket of fog to add a zen-like atmosphere to your surroundings. I love foggy days in big cities; it muffles ambient noise and turns even the dreariest street into an adventure, but my foggy photo of choice comes from the middle of Arches National Park in Utah. Most of the year this park boasts glowing red rocks against clear blue skies, but if you inadvertently arrive in the middle of monsoon season like we did, you’ll likely encounter a deliciously foggy scene like this.

Just like fog, when snow falls it brings with it a magical hush. Everything seems softer and slower – at least until the snow ploughs kick in. Here’s Manhattan’s Inwood Hill Park with a dusting of snow.

Last but certainly not least, my favourite peaceful scene of all – the great open road. The sight of Montana’s Big Sky Country and miles of road ahead is something that will live in my mind’s eye forever.

No need to hold your peace any longer because now it’s your turn. If you would like to join in this week’s travel theme (everyone’s welcome!) here’s what to do:

  • Create your own post and title it Travel theme: Peaceful
  • Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
  • Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday
  • Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS – if you’re already following on WordPress.com, remember I’m getting ready to switch website hosts so sign up for email or RSS to keep up to date on posts.

Keep calm and travel on.

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.
