The Rio Olympics are officially underway so what better way to celebrate than to explore the world of sport for this week’s travel theme, starting with a muddy game of tug-of-war, from the not-quite-Rio Sheep Olympics I attended in the wee Irish town of Gorey a while back.
A budding gymnast, or future carny, doing a good job of balancing on a May Day tightrope.
A long jumper on Seattle’s Alki Beach.
I think Olympic swim events would be greatly improved by the inclusion of the doggy paddle.
Canoeing as a commute in Guatemala.
And for the closing shot, how about sailing off into the sunset like this…
If you’re feeling athletic enough for a challenge, how about creating your own version of this theme? If you would like to join in (everyone’s welcome to join in!) here’s what to do:
- Create your own post and title it Travel theme: Sport
- Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
- Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday (unless, of course, I get locked out again!)
- Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS.

I always turn to the sports section first. The sports page records people’s accomplishments; the front page has nothing but man’s failures. – Earl Warren
