After last week’s sporty theme I thought something more cerebral might serve to balance things out, so here’s an homage to writing in all its variations, starting with some colourful spray painting at Cadillac Ranch on Route 66.
The writing on the wall, along Rome‘s Aventine Hill on the way to hidden vistas and orange groves.
A little more graffiti, this time on London’s South Bank.
Some of the best writing in the English language, Shakespeare’s First Folio at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library in Yale.
The amazing floor of Seattle’s Central Library, an artwork by Ann Hamilton. The first sentences of the library’s collection of books in eleven different languages and scripts.
Are you ready to do the ‘write’ thing and create your own version of this theme? If you would like to join in (everyone’s welcome to join in!) here’s what to do:
- Create your own post and title it Travel theme: Writing
- Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
- Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday (unless, of course, I get locked out again!)
- Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS.

Writing is easy. All you have to do is cross out the wrong words. – Mark Twain
If you do not breathe through writing, if you do not cry out in writing, or sing in writing, then don’t write, because our culture has no use for it. – Anaïs Nin
