This last week has brought a marked difference to the light levels in my current corner of the northern hemisphere. It is getting brighter earlier and evenings are beginning to linger in the most delightful way. I never realize exactly how much the lack of light during winter affects me until this time of year rolls around and I experience what can only be described as a kind of quickening. The sap is rising and energizing everything and everyone in its wake, so this week’s theme is a tribute to the energy that is starting to seep back into the world.
The king of energy, at least from our perspective down here on the blue planet, would have to be the sun in all its glory.
Close behind the sun comes man’s burning discovery, fire. We use it for heat and light, we cook with it, and occasionally, we play with it, like this fire eater in Guatemala.
In a similar vein, our love affair with fire has given us the almighty firework display, which never fails to instill childlike energy into even the most serious of onlookers. Here is a very sparkly Space Needle from a New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Seattle.
