Waiting for a friend earlier, I found myself absent-mindedly leafing through a pile of glossy magazines strewn along the windowsill of a cosy little coffee shop. The lustre of those smooth, shiny pages gave me the inspiration for this week’s travel theme. First up, the classy, glossy finish of a vintage car and its hood ornament at a rally at the Powerscourt Estate in Wicklow.
Outdoor art, polished to perfection in Seattle‘s Olympic Sculpture Park.
Old-fashioned glossy splendour in Grand Central Terminal, the iconic clock under which countless couples have stolen kisses through the years.
From old-fashioned glamour to modern-day glitz, a dazzling fountain in the lobby of the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
Are you ready to polish up a few photos and create your own interpretation of this week’s theme? If you would like to join in (everyone’s welcome!) here’s what to do:
- Create your own post and title it Travel theme: Gloss
- Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
- Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday
- Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS.

If you don’t have your experiences in the moment, if you gloss them over with jokes or zoom past them, you end up with curiously dispassionate memories. – David Rakoff
Like ultraviolet rays, memory shows to each man in the book of life a script that invisibly and prophetically glosses the text. – Walter Benjamin
