I’ve just been busy delving into the past, discovering the early days of perfume, so I thought it might be interesting to go in the opposite direction and explore the future in this week’s travel theme. To start things off, our daily harbinger of the future; the dawn of a new day.
Seattle’s Space Needle was held to be the pinnacle of futuristic design at the 1962 World’s Fair.
Ok this might be pushing it a little, but I always think those human statues look freakily futuristic, like cyborgs or something.
Metal trees on the beach at Coney Island – I found them quite grim to be honest, they struck me as a worst case scenario in a future where we’ve destroyed all of the real trees. ♫ They paved paradise, put up a parking lot. ♫
The stunning landscapes of central Turkey may have been hewn in the past but they put me in mind of alien, futuristic planets in galaxies far, far away. Seriously, can’t you just imagine Star Wars’ Kylo Ren having a bit of a mope around on those hills?
It’s time to get ahead of yourself and create your own future post on this week’s theme. If you would like to join in (everyone’s welcome!) here’s what to do:
- Create your own post and title it Travel theme: Future
- Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
- Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday
- Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS.

There is always one moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in. – Graham Greene
I am tomorrow, or some future day, what I establish today. I am today what I established yesterday or some previous day. – James Joyce
Quite agree with you about those terrible tin palm trees at Coney Island! When I first saw them, I couldn’t believe anyone would think them attractive (or even interesting). If there are no palm trees on your beach, well…that’s just the way it is. Great post!
Yaay, glad to hear I wasn’t the only one disturbed by them. 🙂

This one will have me thinking, Ailsa! And I like your reference to Joni Mitchell…..
Gotta love Joni 🙂
😊
Mmm, interesting thoughts, Ailsa – and I adore Turkey and Star Wars! I will have to do some …..thinking here…

Brilliant interpretation, Leya, scarily industrial. I’m with you, hoping for a far, far greener future. 🙂
You know… this is rather an apt topic for today. Yep, today… 15 years ago we arrived at Dublin International. It was sleeting that day and we wondered what made us come from the southern hemisphere summer to freezing Ireland! But, here we still are… this is home now so our future is most definitely Irish!! 😉
Woohoo, happy immigration anniversary to you and the GLW. AJ. xxx
Thanking you!! I’ve done a wee post for tomorrow!! 😉

The people of Carti in the San Blas Islands, Panama, left me feeling optimistic about the Future: https://jaspasjourney.wordpress.com/2016/01/23/the-real-san-blas-islands-panama/
I saw one of those metal palms in Mexico, which I found quite humorous!
I’ve never understood the Space Needle. Is it a grim reminder that we need to build above the smog? An attempt to show life in the clouds? The most inefficient style of apartment complex? Something that looks sort of futuristic and utilitarianism be damned?

I hope the future holds nothing but joy and love for you, Ailsa. Another great theme, with photos to match it. The group with the dog, is that in Dublin? I think I have almost the same photo. 😀

Ugh! Those palm trees are obscene! I did like the reference to Joni Mitchell though – nice one! And the human statues are very creepy.

I went through my dropbox archives but can find nothing that screams future to me any better than the tin palm trees and your Joni Mitchell reference. Just perfect. And disturbing!
