I’ve been busy admiring the scenery of Glendalough from above recently, but have been lucky enough to have taken in several wonderful views around the world from above. First up, the lovely city of Seattle at nighttime, taken from the top of the Space Needle.
A rainy day on the via Condotti in Rome, taken from the top of the Spanish Steps.
It is only from above that you can truly appreciate how much of Manhattan is taken up by Central Park – this is the jaw-dropping view looking north from the Top of the Rock.
One of my favourite views of all time, flying over the Alps with my nose pressed up against the window, watching those amazing mountains spread out for miles like the stippled icing on top of a Christmas cake.
Do you have a favourite view from above? If you would like to join in this week’s travel theme (everyone’s welcome!) here’s what to do:

This above all; to thine own self be true. – William Shakespeare
May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. – Edward Abbey

How do you come up with these splendid themes, Ailsa? And such nice photos!
Here’s mine: http://drieskewrites.wordpress.com/2014/11/28/travel-theme-above/
Hi Marion, I usually find inspiration from whatever has happened during the week, sometimes I sit down with absolutely no idea what theme I’m going to pick and something always pops into my mind as I’m staring at the screen 🙂 So glad you enjoyed this week’s photos, I adore your Lisbon rooftops, I find rooftops endlessly fascinating – when I was in Edinburgh I had to be careful not to bump into things because the rooftops were so amazing I spent most of my time looking up. 🙂
Oh, great, Ailsa! I know I can find something for this!!
Ooh excellent, looking forward to your post, Sue. 🙂
Great! I love the Alps one. Here are my photos depicting above/on top of things around the world: http://anewlifewandering.com/2014/04/19/on-top-around-the-world/
Oh Mani, so many wonderful photos – that goat had me laughing out loud. The b/w shot from the Eiffel Tower is stunning, gosh isn’t Paris majestic? That view from Seclusion Hill (what a lovely name) is really beautiful. xxx Ailsa
Thank you! Yes Paris is majestic, and Seclusion Hill is wonderful, it’s got a great energy to it.

Aeroplanes racing above the Detroit River… now that’s exciting!

Woah, that’s so cool, I got a head rush just looking at your photos. Fantastic action shots, I have now put Red Bull Air Race on my list of things I must experience 🙂
You won’t be disappointed, Ailsa. You just have to keep remembering to breath!
Great selections Ailsa. Here is some of mine:http://regionalcognisance.wordpress.com/2014/11/29/travel-theme-from-above/
I love all these shots, Mick, the landscapes are gorgeous and I would not like to be driving in that Bangkok traffic – but the one that really intrigued me was the Chiang Mai foot massages – ooh, I could do with one of those right now, sounds like heaven. 🙂
We caught the bus, train and riverboat in Bangkok; a great way to get around. The foot massages are indeed very popular. Thanks Ailsa.
Love the “on top of the world” perspective!
Thanks Amanda, it’s so easy to get stuck at ground level, especially in big cities, so I always try to find some way to get to higher ground for another perspective. xxx

Great theme this weeks Ailsa. I’ve flown over the Alps many times, and I never tire of that view http://sasieology.wordpress.com/2014/11/28/travel-theme-above/
Every time I see those snowy peaks I get a rush of excitement. The first time I left home to work abroad, I flew over the Alps and every time I see them I am reminded of that very first thrill of travelling. And as for your post, wow – I cannot imagine a better way to celebrate your 30th birthday. LOVE it. 🙂
I have more than a few ‘peering through the clouds’, but let me just have a look and see what I can come up with 🙂 I’d love to be in Seattle for that shot, Ailsa 🙂
Looking forward to what you come up with, Jo. I love the view from the Space Needle, that shot was taken the last time I was in Seattle, the night before I left. Fills me with nostalgia for the Emerald City. xxx

Here’s my take on this one. Thanks as always for an excuse to look through my travel photos. I love yours, especially the on in Rome. http://jennysotherstuff.wordpress.com/2014/11/29/travel-theme-above/
Haha, excellent, Jenny, everyone needs an excuse to look through travel photos! Great shot, disorienting for sure. Did it feel weird walking underneath it?
Thanks Aisla. It wasn’t so bad walking under it because we were watching entertainers. It looks weirder now looking back at it.
Really appreciate the photo of Central Park. I had no idea it was so large! It is quite amazing amidst all those skyscrapers.

Nice Collection..
Amazing pictures, Ailsa. I didn’ t realise Central Park is that huge.
Your last picture makes me dream.
