As my road trip around the US plunges into its final stretch, I wanted to pay tribute to the unsung hero of the journey… the great open road. One of the biggest ‘wow’ moments I had on my journey from Seattle to Boston was when our car crested a hill along I-90 and I suddenly understood why Montana was called Big Sky Country.
On the Utah leg of the trip, Highway 24 proved so spectacular I couldn’t limit myself to just one photo of this wondrous and at times unnerving road.
In Ireland, you can’t beat a long drive along the winding road that leads across the bleakly beautiful Featherbeds.
Last but not least, a small road winding through Ciudad Vieja, on the way to climbing Pacaya Volcano in Guatemala. A parade passed along the road in front of us and when the road opened up again, it was strewn with petals and cut grass.
Can I entice you to have one for the road? If you would like to join in the travel theme (everyone’s welcome!) here’s what to do:
- Create your own post and title it Travel theme: Roads
- Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
- Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday
- Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS.
Looking forward to seeing you get the show on the road.

Ooh, it’s truly beautiful in its own right, wildsherkin, I love how the tips of red lead the eye right down to the ocean beyond. Lovely.
Beautiful photography! I haven’t been on a road trip in a long time. I need to take one now 🙂
Oh yes, everyone needs a little road trip now and then! 🙂

Oh I’m so glad you enjoy the themes, PJB, I love that so many people join in each week, it’s so much fun. Loved your photos, but I always get scared when I see wildlife trying to cross busy roads.
Yes, it is always enough to make my stomach lurch when I see them making a dash for it. It is a nice crowd that you get every week. I always enjoy it, so thanks!

That’s lovely, iplaycamera, it kind of looks like Tenerife, am I close? 🙂
On the top of Teide 🙂 A good guess – you visited Teide as well? Tenerife is beautiful. I really got suprised as it showed to be so much more than a touristed island 🙂
Your roads are so much better than mine:
Haha, my roads maybe ended somewhere better, mostly 😉 Did you literally lie down in the middle of the road to get that shot? Cool!
Thanks for checking my blog, you have great themes and great photos
Thanks Avril, join in the weekly themes if you like, everyone’s welcome! 🙂

No kidding, Georgia, I have never seen skies like that in my life. They went on forever. Lovely series of photos, those horses squeezing along the road are adorable. 🙂
Who has lost his cheese?
A funny scene on a roadway of a very large model train layout!

Haha, that made me do a double-take, Madoqua, brilliant. 🙂
Thanks Ailsa, I enjoy your challenges immensely, I just seem to run out of time some weeks to respond!
This was an amazing layout and the humour everywhere was lovely!

Well Ailsa I am very late this week but here it is…
Wow, that was well worth the wait, pommepal, what an amazing tour around Australia’s roadways, I felt like I was right there with you on your journey. That Great Ocean Road is breathtaking, and boy, look at the curves of the Alpine Way. I never think of Snowy Mountains when I think of Australia. How wonderful.
It’s a big country but only have that small area of alpine country. All the main roads are very well maintained. Have you ever been to Australia?
No, never, but after you taking me on your road trip, I really want to see it for myself. xxx
Make sure you come over for at least 6 months or longer, it really is a BIG country…

Thanks for stopping by my site, which brought me to your posts. I LOVE the American open roads and enjoy lots of long road trips when in US. Maybe it’s because it’s such a contrast with our TINY roads, speed limit 25/35MPH on guernsey.
Road Trips are always amazing .. the changing Vistas, Culture, People, food .. and location of-course 🙂 There is nothing like a long road trip ….loved the post here … cheers
