Travel theme: Roads

As my road trip around the US plunges into its final stretch, I wanted to pay tribute to the unsung hero of the journey… the great open road. One of the biggest ‘wow’ moments I had on my journey from Seattle to Boston was when our car crested a hill along I-90 and I suddenly understood why Montana was called Big Sky Country.

On the Utah leg of the trip, Highway 24 proved so spectacular I couldn’t limit myself to just one photo of this wondrous and at times unnerving road.

In Ireland, you can’t beat a long drive along the winding road that leads across the bleakly beautiful  Featherbeds.

Last but not least, a small road winding through Ciudad Vieja, on the way to climbing Pacaya Volcano in Guatemala. A parade passed along the road in front of us and when the road opened up again, it was strewn with petals and cut grass.

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.

Hey there, welcome aboard! Lovely series, that Oldenburg shot is wonderful, but wow, the BC road/river one is off the charts, how on earth did you get through that without your car cutting out? 🙂

Love it, Sas, that tunnel is wonderful.

Thanks, it’s the tunnel we drove through on our way into Yosemite National Park. I couldn’t wait for the view at the other end. Unfortunately I couldn’t get a photo as we came out of the tunnel, but it was some of the most incredible scenery I’ve ever seen:)

Wonderful, love the Amish carriage, and boy, those zig zags are crazy. Not sure about the grass, but it looked cool and smelled wonderful. 🙂

Here is a second entry for the travel theme roads. The Champs-Élysées is arguably the most famous street in the world.

Oh my, I’d forgotten exactly how dramatic the Champs-Élysées is, your top photo shows it off magnificently. Lovely shots, Daniel. 🙂
