I can’t count the number of dreary in-flight safety videos I have sat through, waiting for takeoff. They all seem to have one thing in common – a stultifying lack of creativity; perhaps a direct result of having a captive audience. Before the advent of the ubiquitous video, at least you could amuse yourself watching some poor soul attempt to look dignified whilst wrangling with an inflatable life jacket, but these days, air passengers are subjected to giant onscreen faces chirpily wagging enormous fingers at you, saying “Smoking is not allowed on any Delta flight” – seriously, I can’t be the only one who is a little scared of the uber-sassy lady in the Delta video.
So it is such a joy to see that Air New Zealand have decided to tackle the problem of getting passengers to pay attention during in-flight safety videos. Last year, they raised the bar with their Hobbit-themed video, complete with cameo appearance by Peter Jackson.
Now, they have done it again, this time with a rollicking adventure sequence starring the fabulous Bear Grylls. Enjoy!
How much fun was that? And be honest, when was the last time you watched an in-flight safety video because it was fun; not because you had to? 🙂

Having travelled to NZ a few times (it is so close) I’ve seen most of their inflight videos and I think there was even one with the crew in body paint which caused quite a stir, anyway, hadn’t seen the Bear Grylls one but love it! Presented with a sense of humour, adventure and topped with spectacular scenery.
absolutely brilliant 🙂
Thanks for sharing, I haven’t seen this one yet but was very excited to see Ruud Kleinpaste make an appearance. About to head off into the unknown in less than four weeks flying Air NZ so once again I’ll have another good chuckle 🙂
The first Air NZ video was definitely the best; I think they’ve tried to get a bit too clever with the later ones. I travel between Auckland and Wellington a lot so see them frequently. I also get served by a couple of the crew who are in the videos – that’s way cool.
The one with the New Zealand All Blacks is a good one too. I think it’s still on youtube? Ah…I dream of a return trip to Middle Earth…
