Travel theme: Shadows

Tomorrow, February 2nd, groundhogs all around the US will be shuffling out of their burrows to predict the weather. Legend has it that if it is sunny and the groundhog sees his shadow, he will return to his burrow and there will be six more weeks of winter. If it is cloudy and no shadow appears, spring promises to be just around the corner. The most famous of these groundhogs is a dapper little fellow by the name of Punxsutawney Phil from Punxsutawney Pennsylvania, made famous by one of my favourite Bill Murray comedies, Groundhog Day.

However, there are many other hard-working groundhogs of note, including Chattanooga Chuck from Chattanooga Tennessee, Woodstock Willie from Woodstock Illinois, Dunkirk Dave from (you guessed it) Dunkirk New York and Chuckles from Manchester Connecticut (apparently nobody explained groundhog naming etiquette to the kind folk of Manchester).

In celebration of these brave little groundhogs, I gathered together a few photos of shadows for this week’s travel theme; some cows and their shadows grazing in the California hills, a lone fisherman looking for a catch in the Hudson River alongside the USS Intrepid and a shadowy window in Castle Clinton looking out over New York’s Battery Park.

So get ready with your own shadowy post and let’s dedicate this week’s travel theme to groundhogs everywhere, especially Chuckles. If you would like to join in the travel theme (everyone’s welcome!) here’s what to do:

  • Create your own post and title it Travel theme: Shadows
  • Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
  • Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday
  • Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS.

Don’t stay in the shadows – join in the fun! Looking forward to your post.

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.

At the Sichuan Opera in Chengdu, which is not really an opera but more of a variety show, we saw a handpuppet performer create some amazing hand shadows. It was impressive and entertaining what he was able to do with just his two hands, including the horse galloping across the moon.

  5. Nice pictures, Ailsa – I especially like your second one with that strange five-way shadow. Here are mine, including a shadow that ought to scare any self-respecting groundhog: http://newpillowbook.wordpress.com/2013/02/02/travel-themes-shadows/
