It’s getting cold around here and I’m staying warm with a soft fleece jacket and soft fluffy socks. All this softness got me looking through my photos to find images that fitted the theme. Here’s what I came up with:
A cheeky red cardinal in New York’s Central Park
The softly-coloured stained glass windows of the Actor’s Chapel in Manhattan
A mound of shea butter waiting to be sold by the scoop at a street market
Delicate grasses around Snug Harbor on Staten Island
A bunny in Alley Pond Park, Queens. It doesn’t get much softer than this!
So what does soft mean to you? If you’d like to join in this week’s travel theme (everyone is welcome to join in), here’s what to do:
- Create your own post and title it Travel Theme: Soft
- Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
- Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday
- Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes
Show me your soft side!

Wonderful photos! Especially the stunning Cardinal!
He was so striking against the snowy backdrop, Cindy, and he knew it too 🙂
I agree, what a great photo of a lovely bird.
AAwww what a lovely theme, Ailsa – I’ll see what I can find!
Yaay, looking forward to your post, Marianne 🙂

Great photos, Ailsa, as usual!
Here’s something soft: http://windagainstcurrent.com/2012/11/09/travel-theme-soft/
Fuzzy little guys, they’re adorable, Vlad. Did they swim right up to your kayak? 🙂
Gorgeous bird! The bunny is a soft spot in a hard place. Nicely done
That rabbit was hilarious, phil – he didn’t know I was there and hopped out right in front of me. Just after I got a few shots, he did a bunny about-turn, looked me in the eye and hopped into the hedgerow with a giant bound. 🙂
They are beautiful photographs, stunning actually!
Thanks, Landy!
We nursed this sweet thing for a night and then gave it back to its mum:

What a little button! So tiny 🙂
Another great post Ailsa! The cardinal photo makes me smile and feel warm inside. If only it warmed my toes, I’m freezing!
It’s very chilly, isn’t it? Stay warm! xxx
They may be of soft subjects but all the photographs are beautiful.
Thanks so much, Animalcouriers 🙂
Lovely photos. I especially like the grasses. Great perspective.
I love grasses, Table in the Sun, one day I want to make my own garden constructed primarily of different types of grasses, there are so many stunning varieties! 🙂

Ooh, a tricky one this week. I’ve had a go though:
http://sasieology.wordpress.com/2012/11/09/travel-theme-soft/
Good one, Sas – I was looking for a photo of an untarnished carpet of snow and couldn’t find one that fit the bill. Your top photo is especially wonderful, with the pine trees half-buried in the snow. Lovely!
Was the shea as yellow as it looks?
It really was, Gilly. I had to ask the stall owner what it was. I must admit, it didn’t look like something I was in a rush to smear on my face! 🙂
Do you smear it on your face Ailsa ??? I don’t think I have heard of that before.
Shea Butter is rather interesting. Someone once gave me a small bottle as a gift. It can be used as a hand cream, but is also apparently edible? I didn’t eat any of mine!
That red bird is so wonderful … red is my favorite color – never seen a bird that red before. It’s magical. The bunny is soft and wonderful too – your photos are so brilliant. My favorite is the shea butter. Love all the colors.
That red cardinal was stunning, viveka, I couldn’t take my eyes off him! The shea butter was pretty cool too, in a gloopy, messy sort of way 🙂
That red cardinal is so stunning – we don’t have that colorful birds in Sweden. Wonderful shot.

Think I’ll put down the laptop and head for the duvet- that’s soft! Your photos sing, Ailsa. Cold and miserable in NYC?
Ooh, the duvet sounds like an awfully good idea, Jo. I’m actually on the west coast right now, Jo (NYC is having a rough time right now with the snow on top of the hurricane) but it’s pretty chilly over here too. Winter is a-coming.
Great photos, I love that first one of the red bird, so pretty!
He was very dashing, Ali. 🙂

Here’s my entry from soft and it is from places I’ve traveled this time!
http://goomfh.wordpress.com/2012/11/09/travel-theme-soft/
Lovely series, masadiso79 – that soft curtain in Santorini makes me want to pack my bags right now and head to the airport!
Thanks! As I mentioned in my entry’s comment, it’s the first time I posted pictures from some traveling places. I don’t get to travel that much… 😦
Audible aaawww for your sweet little cardinal – he is so little, wonder where his mate is (or parents)? They usually travel in pairs up here…
His better half was on the fence post to my right, keeping a close eye on me. She was terribly pretty too. 🙂
Ah well i guess i best find some other photos than my soft aussie animals i posted the other day as part of another challenge … wonderful theme again 🙂
Soft aussie animals rule, Jenn, just had a quick look, that close up of the kangaroo is priceless. Love it! And looking forward to your post. xxx
i love it too 🙂 old man kangaroo snoozing and quite disdainful at being interrupted for a photo lol
Haha, yes, he looked less than impressed!

Great theme – just what we need up here in the north! You really have caught many different “softnesses”. The bird is gorgeous. Now I must go through my computer to find something suitable…
The delicate grasses are magic! Such a pretty photo of something unexpectedly pretty. And soft.
Great theme! My soft seems to be to do with warmth and focus! http://annarashbrook.wordpress.com/2012/11/10/travel-themesoft/
I didn’t find anything soft among the war photos (no surprise there) but I remembered a possum we managed to photograph one night: http://soundslikewish.wordpress.com/2012/11/10/ailsas-photo-challenge-soft/
