Travel theme: Soft

It’s getting cold around here and I’m staying warm with a soft fleece jacket and soft fluffy socks. All this softness got me looking through my photos to find images that fitted the theme. Here’s what I came up with:

A cheeky red cardinal in New York’s Central Park

The softly-coloured stained glass windows of the Actor’s Chapel in Manhattan

A mound of shea butter waiting to be sold by the scoop at a street market

Delicate grasses around Snug Harbor on Staten Island

A bunny in Alley Pond Park, Queens. It doesn’t get much softer than this!

So what does soft mean to you? If you’d like to join in this week’s travel theme (everyone is welcome to join in), here’s what to do:

  • Create your own post and title it Travel Theme: Soft
  • Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
  • Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday
  • Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes

Show me your soft side!

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.

  4. Gorgeous bird! The bunny is a soft spot in a hard place. Nicely done

    • ailsapm says:

That rabbit was hilarious, phil – he didn’t know I was there and hopped out right in front of me. Just after I got a few shots, he did a bunny about-turn, looked me in the eye and hopped into the hedgerow with a giant bound. 🙂

  5. The Landy says:

They are beautiful photographs, stunning actually!

  6. stefanini says:

We nursed this sweet thing for a night and then gave it back to its mum:

Another great post Ailsa! The cardinal photo makes me smile and feel warm inside. If only it warmed my toes, I’m freezing!

  8. They may be of soft subjects but all the photographs are beautiful.

  9. A Table in the Sun says:

Lovely photos. I especially like the grasses. Great perspective.

    • ailsapm says:

I love grasses, Table in the Sun, one day I want to make my own garden constructed primarily of different types of grasses, there are so many stunning varieties! 🙂

Ooh, a tricky one this week. I’ve had a go though:
    http://sasieology.wordpress.com/2012/11/09/travel-theme-soft/

    • ailsapm says:

Good one, Sas – I was looking for a photo of an untarnished carpet of snow and couldn’t find one that fit the bill. Your top photo is especially wonderful, with the pine trees half-buried in the snow. Lovely!

  12. Lucid Gypsy says:

Was the shea as yellow as it looks?

    • ailsapm says:

It really was, Gilly. I had to ask the stall owner what it was. I must admit, it didn’t look like something I was in a rush to smear on my face! 🙂

      • Jo Bryant says:

Do you smear it on your face Ailsa ??? I don’t think I have heard of that before.

        • Madoqua says:

Shea Butter is rather interesting. Someone once gave me a small bottle as a gift. It can be used as a hand cream, but is also apparently edible? I didn’t eat any of mine!

  13. viveka says:

That red bird is so wonderful … red is my favorite color – never seen a bird that red before. It’s magical. The bunny is soft and wonderful too – your photos are so brilliant. My favorite is the shea butter. Love all the colors.

Think I’ll put down the laptop and head for the duvet- that’s soft! Your photos sing, Ailsa. Cold and miserable in NYC?

    • ailsapm says:

Ooh, the duvet sounds like an awfully good idea, Jo. I’m actually on the west coast right now, Jo (NYC is having a rough time right now with the snow on top of the hurricane) but it’s pretty chilly over here too. Winter is a-coming.

  16. Ali says:

Great photos, I love that first one of the red bird, so pretty!

Lovely series, masadiso79 – that soft curtain in Santorini makes me want to pack my bags right now and head to the airport!

      • masadiso79 says:

Thanks! As I mentioned in my entry’s comment, it’s the first time I posted pictures from some traveling places. I don’t get to travel that much… 😦

  19. ideflex says:

Audible aaawww for your sweet little cardinal – he is so little, wonder where his mate is (or parents)? They usually travel in pairs up here…

  20. Jenn says:
