Travel theme: Oceans

June 8th is World Oceans Day. World Oceans Day has been unofficially celebrated on June 8th since 1992 when Canada proposed the idea at the Earth Summit in Rio, and was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008. The official website is worldoceansday.org where you can keep up to date on news and events, or you can follow the hashtag #worldoceansday on Twitter.

Here’s my own little tribute to two of my favourite oceans. First, the Atlantic Ocean, which I am most familiar with from school caving expeditions to the west coast of Ireland, although this photo is taken from the east coast of the United States….

….and the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean, taken from the Hawaiian islands.

World Oceans Day not only celebrates the oceans, but also the marine life it sustains, so say hello to these little furry friends off the coast of California.

I thought this would be the perfect travel challenge this week, because not only would we get to see great photos of oceans around the world, but we would also be spreading awareness of World Oceans Day.

To join in, create your own post about the ocean or marine life between now and next Friday, title it “Travel theme: Oceans” and put a link to this page in your blog post to make it easy for others to find your post.

I’m looking forward to seeing your ocean photos.

Happy World Oceans Day.

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.

Finally, I got around to doing this post. I am really far behind these days. Not your usual take on ocean but interesting I hope!

Definitely a different beach culture than many are used to, Nicole, and the heckling could get you down! By the way, when and where is that blogging convention in NY that you were planning on attending? I seem to remember it’s coming up soon…

It is August 2-4 in NYC and called BlogHer. Look it up online. I have never been but a fellow blogger I work and write with, Jen Burden of World Moms Blog went last year and her life has changed, as has mine. She met so many great contacts! There are about 3500 bloggers that attend, mostly women. I don’t like big crowds but thought it would be a great networking event. You can still buy tickets too. Check out their website! If you attend, let me know as it would be so cool to meet up!!! Nicole

  2. Nice! I am skipping this week, but will join in next week!! 😀 Keep these going, Ailsa!!

We so enjoyed watching the sea otters play, standing on the shore in Monterey, CA! Longing to go back there. I will try and do an oceans post today. The photos are beautiful and thanks so much to The Wanderlust Gene for linking me to your blog. Greetings from Jamaica, West Indies (hot and yearning for some rain!)

Ooh, welcome to the travel challenge, Petchary, I’d love to see some photos from Jamaica! It’s humid and sunny where I am too, a rain shower would be most welcome!
