Travel theme: Camping

Now I’ve done my fair share of camping, with, ummm, mixed results, like when my sleeping bag got flooded at Mount St Helens, or the time I woke up with a face full of keyboard along the Oregon Coast. But there were many more memories too, like the campfire that refused to light so no dinner for us…

…and the welcoming crackle of a proper fire and the smell of wood smoke when fires lit properly.

Sharing a tent with doggies who camp a whole lot better than I do.

Hands-down best camping trip ever – it was only one night and we didn’t even sleep until dawn, spending the whole night round a fire chatting under starry skies, in the most amazing setting, on the forested shores of a lake surrounded by great craggy mountains. I took this shot just before we decided we should really try to get some sleep. See the dawn creeping over those trees?

Camping is nature’s way of promoting the motel business. – Dave Barry

My particular dread–the vivid possibility that left me staring at tree shadows on the bedroom ceiling night after night–was having to lie in a small tent, alone in an inky wilderness, listening to a foraging bear outside and wondering what its intentions were. – Bill Bryson
