I started off 2016 with a traditional plunge into the ice-cold waters of the Irish Sea. A bitter wind churned up waves that drenched me long before I had waded out deep enough to swim, and as my teeth chattered and my legs turned blue, I decided upon this week’s theme. Here are some distinctly warmer waves from the sunny isles of Hawaii.
Some more waves, this time etched in stone in Utah’s Zion National Park. Also a lot warmer than the waves I encountered today!
Waves of colour streaking across the sky on a balmy July 4th evening over Manhattan.
Folklife festival-goer waves a posy of flowers.
Are you ready to wave goodbye to the old year and usher in the new year with your own interpretation of this week’s theme? If you would like to join in (everyone’s welcome!) here’s what to do:
- Create your own post and title it Travel theme: Waves
- Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
- Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday
- Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS.
Wishing you a very happy New Year.

Sit in reverie and watch the changing colour of the waves that break upon the idle seashore of the mind. – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
The world is full of poetry. The air is living with its spirit; and the waves dance to the music of its melodies, and sparkle in its brightness. – James Gates Percival
