Travel theme: Toys

The title of my last post, If you go down to the woods today, was inspired by the fact that last week, July 10th, was National Teddy Bear Picnic Day. [The date may have passed but it’s never too late to pack a picnic, grab your teddy and make for the woods.] Shortly after writing it, I switched on the news to hear the iconic NYC toy store FAO Schwartz was closing its doors on 5th Avenue due to exorbitant rent demands. All those memories, not to mention that giant piano that Tom Hanks made famous in the movie ‘Big’. So this week’s theme is ‘Toys’ and here are a group of some of the most famous toys in literature – the inhabitants of Hundred Acre Wood, Winnie the Pooh and his friends, now living in Manhattan.

Boys with toys, spotted on my recent visit to Tramore Beach on the south coast of Ireland. Their kids got bored and ran off to play in the ocean, but these two dads just kept right on building their sandcastles.

Nutcrackers and a Christmassy toy village in Leavenworth, the pseudo-alpine town in the heart of Washington state where it’s Christmas every day.

A giant, inflatable Kermit the Frog face down on the streets of Manhattan the night before Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. He looked a little worse for wear.

Look away, kids, Kermie’s had a little too much to drink.

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.
