Travel theme: Hats

I’ve never considered myself a slave to fashion; to be honest I delight in being quirkily unfashionable; shabby chic and more often than not, just shabby. As I was writing that last sentence I took a quick glance at what I was wearing and realized my socks don’t match. I’ve worn white after Labor Day which is apparently a crime against fashion in the US – nobody knows exactly when the rules were imposed or by whom, but I have an image in my head of a group of bored socialites with nothing better to do, deciding on a whim that ‘thou shalt only wear white between Memorial Day and Labor Day’. Coco Chanel bucked the trend, flouncing around in white whenever she pleased, so I figure I can too.

Another of those strange fashion rules concerns hats. Although there are slight regional variations around the US, today, May 15th, is recognized as the official Straw Hat Day. It is time to stash your winter felt hat away and break out your boater. So to celebrate Straw Hat Day, I decided to have a shuffle through my travel shots to see what hats I could find. Here’s a rather steely Viking hat ‘o war from the Brian Ború celebrations in Killaloe, County Clare.

And finally, a fabulous straw hat-wearing boater out on the waters of Lake Atitlán.

Aren’t hats fabulous? I think the world would be a much better place if we all wore hats more often. Are you ready to throw your hat into the ring with your own interpretation of this week’s theme? If you would like to join in (everyone’s welcome!) here’s what to do:

About ailsapm

Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall. And I’m just getting started. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.

I didn’t join in the challenge because when my computer got hacked last year, I lost so many pictures, I nearly cried. My favorite pic of me in a hat: a fur hat, reminiscent of Octopussy, the type Russian women wear… I wore it to a writers affair once, with a coat that has only slits for sleeves, and awesome huge buttons… I was stylin!!! lol but for everyday, I can’t get away with it. Even in winter! and mixmatched socks are IN…just ask the younger kids. They do it on purpose. The real problem comes when you show up at work with one black flat and one brown, and didn’t even notice before you left the house!!! hehehehe that was a fun day!

Losing photos is devastating. When Mum and I went to the UK and Ireland I lost around 500 photos from Ireland and Cornwall because my card wasn’t compatible with my camera. I was upset for a long time and still mourn some of those shots but I have the memories and at least Mum also had her camera.

Great idea for a theme; I couldn’t believe how many hat shots I had when I began really looking. Here’s my contribution to the theme. https://suzysu.wordpress.com/2015/05/18/the-point-of-hats/
