It’s been raining a lot, even by Seattle standards. Recent rainfall has broken daily records, and my boots have sprung a leak. Still, never one to let anything dampen my spirits (pun intended) I am deciding to use the torrential cloudbursts as my inspiration for the week. Here are a few fluid shots I’ve taken recently.
This photo was taken in New York’s Times Square during a rain shower. The manhole covers had filled up with rainwater and reminded me of a witches’ cauldron right out of Macbeth. I can almost hear them cackling ‘Double double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble‘.
I was standing at the fountain of the National WW2 Memorial in Washington DC just as the sun went down, and caught its golden rays through the dancing waters.
This next shot was taken from Amtrak’s Empire Builder somewhere along the Missouri River, close to Wolf Point, Montana. Something about the quality of the light reminds me of the Victorian landscape paintings of Sidney Richard Percy.
The last two shots were taken at Andover Lake in Connecticut; a sparkling sunset and a gleeful dog creating ripples across the lake’s surface.
So if you’re tempted to get your feet wet, and would like to join in this week’s travel theme (everyone’s welcome!) here’s what to do:
- Create your own post and title it Travel Theme: Liquid
- Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
- Get your post in by next Thursday, as the new travel theme comes out on Friday
- Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes

Dear Ailsa and all you blogfriends,
I created a connection between the first, third and last picture you’ve posted here, with my painting of a Siren who bewitches the sailors on their boats with her songs…
I don’t know how you manage it Ailsa, but I think it’s a kind of magic how again you picked a theme that fits exactly the item of my blogpost from last wednesday. Thanks for it.
Hope you enjoy my “mermaid” painting named after a musicproject from Philip Glass “songs of liquid days” I’ve linked one of the songs to the image, so don’t forget to let yourselve be enchanted by her voice.

For the balance, I wish you all a dry and sunny weekend 😉

Super Soggy in Shanghai too! 3 days of rain in a row which as a teacher is a nightmare with indoor recess! By the end of the third day the kids were a little crazy. I decided to look at the positive side of liquid and you can find my pics here 🙂
I love the shots as always… and yes it does look like a witches’ cauldron!
