Yesterday was World Animal Day, an international celebration of all the amazing creatures we share this planet with. It was conceived in 1931 at an ecology convention in Florence, with October 4th chosen as the date because it coincided with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
I don’t think a single day is enough to celebrate the animal kingdom, so let’s make it a week-long celebration here on Where’s my backpack? Here are a few endearing creatures I’ve met on my travels.
If you’d like to join in, here’s what to do:
- Create your own post about animals and title it Travel Theme: Animals
- Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
- Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes.
It doesn’t have to be about wildlife; you can write an ode to your neighbour’s moggy if you like! I can’t wait to see what you come up with.
Give me a high-five paw!
xxx

Lovely animals you have here. am especially fond of the racoon…
Ailsa, you stirred me up again…here you go with my take.

Wow, Robert, that’s the coolest story ever! And you have the photo to prove it. Love it so much I have a huge grin on my face. And you’re right, it was a brownie, I just know it! xxx

You’re a regular Dr Doolittle, Vlad! I love the shots of the gull with the crab, and you know my weakness for squirrels, especially wise guy squirrels!
Hello 🙂 Here is mine.

What a treat to have such a pretty little neighbour. Love it.
Hi. Here is my contribution – it’s all about elephants! http://sueannm66.wordpress.com/2012/10/08/travel-theme-animals/
Basanti looks like a very wise and gentle elephant. Love Basanti’s markings. Thanks for joining in this week. xxx
It was my pleasure. I will be joining you again!

G’day Ailsa well you have really opened up my memory box this week I love taking photos of animals and birds and I think this one of Jack and the cassowary is one of my all time favourites. I have also put in a link to a video I took of the cassowary wandering around the camp ground looking for hand outs, quite scary…
Love it, pommepal, this is the second cassowary post this week and to think, I’d never heard of them before. What a fascinating bird. I see Jack broke out the new trousers for this photo! 😉
Yes I saw Stephan Kelly’s post which reminded me of this photo. It was actually taken in 2011, before Jack had his present favourite pants, his signature look back then was the “trendy” hat which has quite a story attached to it….
Great photos great theme! here’s mine http://citylifepicture.wordpress.com/2012/10/08/travel-theme-animals/
This is hysterical, could Clyde find anything smaller to fit into? Love it. xxx
🙂 not really but he’ll have a good try.

Another great theme! here are a few more animals, http://thegingerbreadcafe.wordpress.com/2012/10/08/travel-theme-animals/
I knew the polar bear was a fake because it’s a well known fact they prefer Pepsi. Lovely post. 🙂

Pingback: A glider in my laundry | Have you ever…
What a fantastic post (I really like the photo of the duck – it’s beautiful).
My response tells an unusual story:
http://madoqua.wordpress.com/2012/10/08/a-glider-in-my-laundry/
What a happy ending, Madoqua, it must have been wonderful to see the glider get back up in that tree! Yaay. I was really happy with the way the wood duck shot came out – all of the surrounding colours are so soft, which adds to the duck’s dramatic markings. Glad you liked it. 🙂

thanks for your challenge, MJ
I would also like to know how to use it!
Lovely series of photos, MJ – the elk and that fabulous wild horse are just spectacular. I haven’t played around with the galleries yet, they look like an interesting addition.
Great theme – but a tricky one…Here´s my entry! Enjoy!

This is a great post, Ann-Christine – you’ve got fantastic shots of animals from all over the world, the last two illustrating mankind’s disregard for fellow citizens of this planet. I didn’t realize chaining a dog to its kennel was illegal in Sweden, but it should be illegal everywhere. And that photo of the majestic eagle chained to its trainer is just as tragic. Great, great post, Ann-Christine.

Great photos for this week’s theme Ailsa! Here is mine: http://wp.me/pT3BE-t7
Lovely photos, that little penguin seemed to be working the camera 🙂
Cute theme this week. I put my lastest post as the “happy” theme, but now I know it can also be the animal theme. 😀
I noticed a lot of people chose animals for their happy theme too, Lisa – it says a lot about the wonderful influence they have on our lives, doesn’t it?
yes! 🙂 love them…they certainly make me smile and happy!
Amazing photos of some wonderful animals. Here is my entry: http://wp.me/p23TG1-1pP
BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!
A perfect combination of two challenges, Francine, and Oliver looks like a very refined fellow. Lovely photos. xxx

Hi Ailsa and other friends. Congratulation for your fantastic shots and sorry for this revision: the Saint patron of animals name is Francis (Francesco) and Assisi is the little village in Umbria/Italy where he lived. 😉
Here my post for Animals http://wp.me/pjXOq-16g
Oops, Max, you are absolutely correct and I knew that – I was typing far too quickly – shall update it now, thanks! Now to your post, what incredible photos, and how wonderful that you have visited the Galapagos – it’s one of my lifelong dreams.

Haha, the difference between cats and dogs, I just love it. xxx
Animals in the wild are sometimes much closer and scarier than they should be: http://runeatlife.me/2012/10/08/travel-theme-animals/ 🙂
Oooh, great shot, I’ve been to Richmond Park, it’s gorgeous – what a great place to go running. And you’re right, two bucks clashing antlers can give you quite a start, it’s surprisingly loud.

Animals from all around the world here, ad, wonderful post, those camels are majestic creatures, aren’t they? Have an amazing time in London! xxx Ailsa
Beautiful shots! My daughter will love this one!
Hurray, say hi to her for me 🙂
A California gray squirrel sleeping on a branch outside the window of my old mountain home. He curled his tail above him as shelter from the rain. I miss that house and my children, trying to write my way back to them from Turkey . . .
What a pretty little squirrel, Lonna.

Nothing spectacular and no exotic animals, just some common animals we see most of the time…
Ahh, but as far as I’m concerned, Joelle, all animals are spectacular 😉 That is one awfully cute little calf, and the deer photo is wonderful too! xxx
Ailsa, these photos are just exquisite – the faces on the squirrel and raccoon are priceless, and the Buffalo and deer are gorgeous – great inspiration or the challenge!
We had a houseguest all weekend so I’m a little late and rushed, but here’s my entry!
Glad you enjoyed the photos, TRS, and very happy you managed a post with your busy weekend. I really enjoyed it, wonderful writing, and great photos. The worm was actually my favourite, so interesting to look at – and I can just tell by her posture that the kitty in the window runs the household. 😉
As always, awesome pictures! Here is my entry: http://ingriddendievel.wordpress.com/2012/10/09/travel-theme-animals/
Oh Ingrid, what gorgeous horses, and how lucky to have seen them in the wild. Wonderful capture! xxx

You captured the soulful eyes of the animals. They melt the heart with just their glance. :-))
Here is my bug for this theme – http://mywordwall.wordpress.com/2012/10/09/travel-theme-animals/
They certainly melted my heart, Imelda. I could watch animals for hours on end; often I do, and never even notice the time passing. Wow – your post – I’ve never seen a Luna moth before, and would totally have mistaken it for a leaf just like you did. Very cool looking, and great photos. xxx
loved your pics! I enjoyed this theme. Here is my contribution http://teedeevee.wordpress.com/2012/10/09/travel-theme-animals/#
Hey teedeevee – great post, highlighting a serious issue – rhino poaching is on the increase and needs to be stopped. Last year Africa’s Western Black Rhino was declared officially extinct, with many more species endangered due to man’s greed. Great link you included in your post to http://www.stoprhinopoaching.com/ Excellent post, my friend. xxx

Great job again Ailsa! Here is my post about the apes on the top of the rock of Gibraltar http://rainbowbakery.wordpress.com/2012/10/09/travel-theme-animals/
Wonderful shots, Georgia, I never knew about the apes who lived at the top of the rock, how fabulous. xxx
They are monkeys. Barbary macaques in fact. I didn’t use them for this theme as I bore my readers to death with pix of them (I live in Gibraltar) – maybe I should have done!!
No, I’m glad you wrote the post you did!
Actually I wrote three! There was one before the one you commented on and a nice piccy one here:
(I have a few blogs….)
Whew, you’re a hard gal to keep up with! It’s been so busy this week I’m still playing catch up with everyone’s entries. Your Gibraltar posts are fascinating.
I’m amazed you can catch up and I appreciate your visits. I’ve taken a blogging break recently over summer so I’m back on a roll (!). Like you, and many other people, I have more than one blog, in my case for different approaches.
Thanks for checking out the Gib posts – I love the monkeys walking down Main Street or on my neighbour’s balcony. I’ve noticed those earlier posts are October in previous years so they should be around again. MUST go out with camera!!
Monkey pix!!
