Yesterday was World Animal Day, an international celebration of all the amazing creatures we share this planet with. It was conceived in 1931 at an ecology convention in Florence, with October 4th chosen as the date because it coincided with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
I don’t think a single day is enough to celebrate the animal kingdom, so let’s make it a week-long celebration here on Where’s my backpack? Here are a few endearing creatures I’ve met on my travels.
If you’d like to join in, here’s what to do:
- Create your own post about animals and title it Travel Theme: Animals
- Include a link to this page in your post so others can find it too
- Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes.
It doesn’t have to be about wildlife; you can write an ode to your neighbour’s moggy if you like! I can’t wait to see what you come up with.
Give me a high-five paw!

I would like to add some meerkats:
Oh mostlymonochrome, I may have developed a cavity, those photos are so sweet. That little baby meerkat killed me, I need to lie down for a bit!
Here is my entry 🙂

Nice one, William, baby elephants are the best! Great shot of the kookaburra too, such a great name – Australia really wins in the animal-naming game!

Hi everybody! I missed last week’s challenge, so I’m rarin’ to go! Here’s my take on this week’s animal theme!
Yaay, welcome back, Stephen – and wow, I have never heard of a cassowary before, thanks for introducing me. Such an odd-looking bird, sort of looks like it was put together from bits of other birds, like a collage 😉
Hi Ailsa … good to be back! And thanks for such an excellent challenge! There have been some great responses so far!
I know, it’s like they’re all stitched together: they’re kinda an ostrich, kinda an emu, kinda like something running around Jurassic Park … they’re the Frankenweenie of birds!

Here is mine: http://wp.me/p1tzBV-1IT Can’t wait to spend some time looking through what others have posted on this theme.
Brilliant, Anne, I can’t believe you got that shot at St John the Divine, hard to imagine a llama in the heart of NYC. Bella looks like she was working the camera!

Ailsa I love that you are highlighting this. I made a header especially for the week before it. Great idea !!! And I adore the images you have used. All round a terrific idea.
Here is mine…the fur babies at my house all contributed to making the special header for this one:
Wonderful photos, Jo, fellow animal lover! And those quotes are spot on too, I love them all. Winnie the Pooh was an awfully wise bear, don’t you think?
He sure was…wiser than most people. If you want to see the cutest Pooh…I saw him in a bookshop. Isn’t he amazing? And very wise there too I think.
🙂
Oh how cute, Jo. Hey, I actually met the original Winnie the Pooh in New York, the one owned by Christopher Robin https://wheresmybackpack.com/2012/05/03/i-met-winnie-the-pooh/
Oh wow…lucky you Ailsa
Great theme, Here is my offering. http://photosbyjillian.wordpress.com/2012/10/07/weekly-travel-theme-animals/ I hope you like it. 🙂
Fabulous, Jillian, that alpaca photo is wonderful, it made me laugh out loud.

G’day Ailsa I couldn’t resist a second post this week on my other blog. I love the photos you have taken, that bison looks so solid you would not want to get in his way.
Aww, looks like you had some great company while you were house sitting, pommepal!
Both Rim and Thunder used to sneak into the bedroom and I would wake up to find them on the bed with me…

Ailsa, couldn’t pass this one, here is my entry:
Lovely photos, Shaanthz. The Bronx Zoo is pretty amazing, isn’t it? Those nyalas are adorable. xxx
Yes, the Bronx zoo is amazing and I don’t get up there often enough as I would like to.

Lovely photos especailly the bright colours on the duck.
Here are my pics… some Canadian Critters.
Lovely, CTB, that chipmunk’s adorable, and dear sweet Holly, what a cutie. Loved your Cuba critters too!
Thanks… Cuba had some fun critters. We bought a little point and shoot underwater camera and left the battery charging at home (oops) or we would have had more fishy shots! Schools of small fish would come right to shore. One day even an angel fish.
Chipmunks are so cute. Once in Barecelona we saw them in cages at a market… guessing someone thinks they are cute enought to be pets!
That is one of my favourite pics of Holly… her eyes so bright.
I shoot a lot of birds (OK, you know I mean with a camera :)) But here are some hippos
Cheers!
Wow, excellent capture – I wouldn’t want to be in his way! It looks like he was coming right at you.
In this case looks are very deceiving, I’m not getting anywhere near this little tussle.
Here is my slightly naughty cheat….a mythical beast I captured on film in China 🙂

I love it, she’s splendid. How wonderful you’ve visited the Forbidden City – and you mention camping along the Great Wall – I didn’t even know that was a possibility. Sounds amazing.
It was pretty cool, but very carefully controlled…one day we had to make a really wide detour to avoid a military base…no photos allowed etc. There was a Chinese ground crew who set up camp each night before we arrived, and they cooked up amazing chinese food in a tent 🙂
I just love the masked raccoon. Great for a masquerade ball.
Haha, perfect costume!

this was a really great theme, Ailsa, thank you.
Really enjoyed your post, and loved that you included some mythical animals in there too! 🙂
What a great way to celebrate and honor the animals! Here’s my contribution for this week – from South Africa, with love, memories, and animals! 😮
Thanks for the weekly inspiration!
I can see why South Africa holds a special place in your hearts – really loved this post and all the wonderful photos!

Your photos are stunning, Ailsa. I’ll start you off with some animals that I didn’t travel very far to photograph but I’m going to rummage through my Tanzania folder now and see if I can find some more. http://wp.me/pWYDB-IW
Thanks Julie, lovely photos, my favourite is the one of the goats. Daisy looks like a sweetie. What a lovely part of the world you live in. xxx

Oh, what beauties, Allan. Too bad your backyard salad bar is closed for business!
Bees, Butterflies and Hummingbirds are filling the gap.
What a great theme! Animals are one of our favorite things to photograph when we travel. We have many animal shots from visits to animal sanctuaries, the zoo, in the wild and even on a cruise. The hardest part was picking just a few of my favorites to post for this weeks travel theme.
Wonderful photos, Daniel, from all over the world too! I’ve never seen albino kangaroos before. xxx

I know, I can’t believe how many incredible animal posts there are this week, Angeline, it’s taking me forever to look at all of them. Loved your post, and the quote by St Francis is wonderful. xxx
