It’s getting all autumnal up here in the northern hemisphere, while down in the southern hemisphere everyone’s looking forward to spring. Whichever hemisphere you inhabit, now is a fantastic time to get out and have a look at what the trees are doing. Whether they’re about to burst into life with fresh green growth, or starting to adorn themselves in their autumn glory; even if they’re still wearing their evergreen needles, it’s a wonderful time to go leaf peeping. Here are a few photos I’ve taken that let foliage take centre stage.
The leafy entrance to the Moongate Garden; part of the Edith B. Haupt Gardens in Washington DC.
Bird-filled branches in Snug Harbor on New York’s Staten Island.
Leafy trees casting long shadows as the sun sets over the hills of northern California.
And last, but not least, a lovely array of leaves peeping over a wall in Antigua, Guatemala.
So get your best foliage photos out and celebrate leaves. If you’d like to join in, create your own post and call it Travel Theme: Foliage. Put a link to this page in your post so others can find it.
Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up to date on the latest weekly travel themes.
Happy leaf peeping!

Ailsa, thank you for the invite. I would love to join…don’t think I have a lot of foliage photos though…never lived and rarely travel to a place that has a distinctive autumn season. Let me look into my photos…
Excellent, I’d love you to join in, but it doesn’t have to be autumn, foodnotherstuff – it can be any time of year at all 🙂
Are flowers included in the definition of foliage? Sorry if this sounds silly, but I just get lost in translation sometimes…you know, english not being my first language …hahaha
Foliage usually refers to leaves only, but if you’ve got some flower photos that show leaves too, go ahead and use them 🙂 And your English is great!
Thanks for clarifying that…and your kind words 😉
Consider me in – I am adding a travel theme for foliage to http://www.anitamacphotos.wordpress.com – thanks for the suggestion!
Wow, that colour is intense, I love it, Anita!
Thank you for the kind invitation which I duly accept. However I have chosen to submit a poem I wrote and posted sometime ago. It is not about foliage in particular more about a lady; me who visits a favela. Although this is a good image. I like it and feel it relates more to your blog and its essense of travel; something I have not embraced fully in my blog. I prefer to keep the journey theme so that I need not travel beyond my front door when the weather is inclement and funds are low!! 🙂
Lovely poem, Helen, and yes, it really does relate to the essence of travel!
I will keep following XXX and Posting
Nice shots! I just posted mine photos, one each from Thailand, Mongolia and Siberia. http://vivianesview.wordpress.com/2012/09/30/travel-theme-foliage/#more-600

Hi Viv, lovely shots, that tree house is awesome! The best thing about these themes is all the great people you get to meet and swap tales with – just had a look at your blog, what an amazing trip you’re on! xxx Ailsa

I love your tree full of birds, and also the palm fronds peeking over the wall! My pictures aren’t very autumnal, probably because we usually travel in the summer 😉 – but here they are: http://newpillowbook.wordpress.com/2012/10/01/travel-themes-foliage/.
Fab shots, those Catacombs Gardens look amazing! 🙂

Thanks so much, Lady F 🙂
Love the pictures with the birds! 🙂 Here’s my take on this theme http://thehoppymommybunny.wordpress.com/2012/10/02/travel-theme-foliage/ 🙂
Lovely series of shots, (and I love your blog name!) The Meiji Shrine is wonderful!
Always nice to see your selection Ailsa ! I went out on a foliage hunt but many of our trees at the moment are not at their most ‘leafpeeping’ best . I did get some shots of some horse chestnut leaves but then realised that actually they were a bit sad as altho colourful I think they are suffering from a moth/larvae blight 😦 which is rather a problem in some areas in UK – but they are hoping that our little blue tit’s feeding habits will help . Hope so.
I await next weeks theme 🙂
Oh dear, hope the trees beat the blight, poppytump, here’s hoping the blue tits work their magic 🙂
Love it, fellow fall foliage follower!

I love the composition of that first photo with the really cool archway. Here is my post for this week: http://rainbowbakery.wordpress.com/2012/10/02/travel-theme-foliage/
You final image from Antigua, Guatemala strikes me the most. It’s the lovely tone of green that is mimicked in the man made structure and the leaves casting the shadow on it.
Heres my foliage http://farnorthlight.wordpress.com/2012/10/02/foliage-on-mt-index-washington-state/
Thanks for the heads up on this photo theme! Here’s my entry for “foliage”: http://brain.queenkv.org/2012/10/02/travel-theme-foliage/
Lovely, Kris, you can’t beat a good vineyard, they’re awfully romantic! 🙂
Here’s another offering – I had to restrict myself to foliage seen while traveling because I am a serious foliage lover! Foliage can be wet, dry, curly, tall, short, matted, and… http://bluebrightly.wordpress.com/2012/09/30/travel-theme-foliage/
These are wonderful, bluebrightly – the two of the houses are stunning and the foggy hemlocks look like they’re right out of a dream!
I’m travelling and providing a service at the same time – I’m house sitting in the Bay of Plenty New Zealand in a rural area. I look after a house and a standard poodle, Ebony. We go for walks twice daily in the avocado orchard next door. The shelter belts are being trimmed, beautiful foliage thuds to the ground, leaving a perfume of resin and a mess. The lean mean machine that does it has a 4-saw guillotine ……I’m a new blogger. Here’s my entry http://kinsahaysblog.com/2012/10/02/travel-theme-foliage/
Well welcome to the travel themes, kinsahays, lovely descriptive narrative in your post, I can almost smell the resin! xxx
