Red is a terribly versatile colour. It can indicate both anger and love; danger and celebration. You can paint the town red, roll out the red carpet or have a red letter day. I’ve been seeing red recently – southern Utah will do that to you. Everywhere you look there is red rock and red sand. There are even red mountain ranges. Here are a few of the red landscapes that caught my eye.

Storm brewing over Red Canyon

Yet another storm brewing over the red scenery along highway 12 – it was monsoon season…

I’d love to see your interpretation of red. If you would like to join in this week’s travel theme, create your own post titled Travel Theme: Red and put a link to this page in your post so others can find it. Check back in next Friday for a new weekly travel theme.
Show me your red-hot shots!

About ailsapm
Hi there! I’m Ailsa Prideaux-Mooney. I’ve lived in many places, and travelled to many more. I had a lot of fun getting there and being there, wherever there happened to be at the time. I climbed a castle wall in Czesky Krumlov, abseiled down cliffs to go caving in the west of Ireland, slept on the beach in Paros, got chased by a swarm of bees in Vourvourou (ok that wasn’t fun, but it was exciting), learned flower arranging in Tokyo, found myself in the middle of a riot in Seoul, learned to snowboard in Salzburg, got lost in a labyrinth in Budapest and had my ice cream stolen by a gull in Cornwall.
And I’m just getting started.
If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve read so far, I’d love you to follow my travelogue - wheresmybackpack.com - and remember, anyone who tries to tell you it’s a small world hasn’t tried to see it all.

Wow! A lot of action for RED here! Cool!
This is my third post for today. Not the norm for me. I think I’m done for now.
Three posts in one day? You go, girl! I loved this post, it was so much fun – your son winning in Vegas is my absolute favourite, it made me laugh. And the double whammy of the red chairs and red wine on your deck – brilliant! xxx Ailsa

These photos are absolutely gorgeous Ailsa! I love Utah as well and have lots of nice photos from the different red rocks I’ve seen, especially in St. George. Here is my entry….
I love this shot, Nicole, that isolated little touch of red just leaps off the screen. I can’t quite believe that shot was taken with an iPhone, that’s impressive! xxx Ailsa
Thanks Ailsa! Yes the iPhone is a great camera too! 🙂

Hi Ailsa,
Beautiful landscapes! Especially the second picture has such a stunning colors.
The last one though, is my favorite because I’m a ‘passionate worshipper’ of the sun 😉
Great theme again.
I couldn’t possibly find a deeper “red” than this one…
Red means passion to me, and passionate I am about these subjects
( http://dauwgalerij.blogspot.be/2012/09/humming-beeings.html ) I find, traveling through my garden – yes – about the music link as well…
This is spectacular, Dauw, it’s like an Andy Warhol bee, if Andy Warhol ever photographed bees. 🙂

Sue, each and every one of these shots is superb, what a delicious array of red. The poppies and the big red horse are startlingly lovely, but my absolute favourite is the Volkening Farm, I can’t stop looking at it. Really really beautiful. xxx Ailsa
Amazing red landscape Ailsa, reminded me of Wadi Rum. The landscape is near identical there, so I decided it would be monotonous to use it for this challenge. Went to Spain instead, hope I don’t ruffle too many sensibilities 🙂
http://theurgetowander.com/2012/09/10/travel-themes-curvas-rojo/
What a fabulous combination of curves and red, Madhu. That red statue is wonderfully dramatic, and I love the huge sweep of red around the Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla (good grief, could that name be any longer?) The bullfight makes me sad and angry at the same time, I can’t bear the thought of it.

Squee, ad, the baby polar bear, oh boy, there are some great shots here, the sneaky sign guy is priceless and the modern-day gladiators are fascinating, but you can’t beat a baby polar bear sleeping with his toy. So adorable I may have to lie down for a little bit. 🙂
Hahaha. Thanks so much, Ailsa. I think the polar bear is the overall winner. Don’t lie down for too long……… we need another theme. 🙂 Have a great weekend.

This is a glorious shot, ididitforjohnny, I cannot tell you how much I love it. The neutrality of all the other colours really shows off that splash of red to perfection and the composition is breathtaking. It reminds me of that Vermeer painting The Girl with the Pearl Earring – with red instead of blue. Just stunning.
Thank you for your kind words!

Hi! Alisa,
My entry this week is a collection of photographs we clicked on a recent trip to Ladakh.
Oh my, these are amazing. It looks as if it was an incredible trip. These are such evocative photos.. ‘Living in Red’ ‘Placed in Red’ ‘Speckled in Red’ and ‘Capped with Red’ – simply stunning. And the ‘Tenacity in Red’ signs made me laugh.
It definitely was an incredible trip. Have tons of snaps from the trip. This is just a sort of a teaser. I think the snaps from ladakh holiday are going to make their way into a lot of posts in the coming future 🙂
